FACL BC is pleased to announce that it will be accepting nominations/applications for the following Awards and Scholarships! Deadline is October 25, 2019.


FACL BC Lawyer of Distinction Award

The FACL BC Lawyer of Distinction Award recognizes a pan-Asian Canadian legal professional, who has practiced law for a minimum of 15 years, for significant and longstanding contributions made to the legal community and for positive contributions made to social justice and/or the pan-Asian community in British Columbia.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the FACL BC Lawyer of Distinction Award, nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Self-identify as of pan-Asian decent (East Asian, Southeast Asian or South Asian); 

  • Be a member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia and practices predominantly in British Columbia or is a judge of any court in British Columbia or teaches at a law school in British Columbia and is a member in good standing with any law society in Canada; 

  • Have practiced law for a minimum of 15 years; 

  • Have demonstrated significant and longstanding contributions in the legal community; and

  • Have demonstrated positive contributions to social justice and/or to the pan-Asian community in British Columbia. 

Nomination process:

  • Nomination forms must be submitted by no later than 5:00 PM on October 25, 2019

  • Nominees may be self-nominated or nominated by a third-party

  • If third-party nomination, prior to making the nomination, nominators must advise the nominee that his or her name is being put forward

  • Nomination package must include: 

    • Nominee’s full name, email, firm/organization, job title, year of call, and main area of law practice

    • Nominator’s full name and email (if third-party nomination) 

    • A description of the nominee’s contributions to the legal community and social justice and/or the pan-Asian community

    • Completed consents

FACL BC Student Scholarship

The FACL BC Student Scholarship Award recognizes a current law student enrolled in a law school in British Columbia who demonstrates a keen interest in and willingness to contribute to the British Columbian pan-Asian Canadian legal community.  One $1000 scholarship will be awarded. Consideration will be given to applicants’ leadership and community involvement, strong vision, academic achievement and financial need. 

Amount

One $1000 scholarship will be awarded.  

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the FACL BC Student Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Self-identify as of pan-Asian decent (East Asian, Southeast Asian or South Asian); 

  • Have demonstrated past, current and/or future involvement in promoting social justice and/or the pan-Asian community in British Columbia; 

  • Have Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status

  • Be currently enrolled in a law school in British Columbia as a JD, LLM or NCA candidate; and

  • Be a member of FACL

Note: Current board members are not eligible for the FACL BC Student Scholarship for a period of 1 year following the date they ceased to be a Student Director.

Selection Process

  • Each nomination/application that meets the eligibility set out above will be reviewed by a panel of FACL BC Legacy board members (e.g. past presidents) and established members of the community

  • FACL BC exercises sole and absolute discretion to determine Award and Scholarship eligibility and recipients

  • FACL BC’s decisions are final and nomination/application materials will not be returned
