Since its founding in 2011, FACL BC has grown to become the primary professional organization supporting BC's growing body of Asian-Canadian lawyers, judges, and law students. Year after year, FACL BC hosts its signature Gala where we join together to celebrate the accomplishments of individuals and contributions made to both the legal community and the community at-large.
FACL BC's 8th Annual Gala will take place on Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Hotel Fairmont Waterfront. This year, we are welcoming about 350 attendees from the BC legal community and beyond.
We are pleased to announce that the Honorable David Eby, Q.C. will be attending FACL BC's 8th Annual Gala.
The Honorable David Eby, Q.C. is a lawyer and a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia for Vancouver-Point Grey. He was first elected in 2013 and is currently serving as the Attorney General of British Columbia. He will be joining us and will give a brief speech about the importance of diversity.
We are also pleased to announce this year's keynote speaker, the Honorable Madam Justice Palbinder Kaur Shergill.
Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court of British Columbia, Justice Shergill practised law with her law firm, Shergill & Company, Trial Lawyers. She has extensive trial and appellate experience and has argued before the Supreme Court of Canada.
Justice Shergill was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2012 and is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for Community Service. She devoted much of her time to human and civil rights legal matters. For more than 23 years, she served, on a pro bono basis, as general legal counsel to the World Sikh Organization of Canada. Regarded as a leading human rights advocate, she has been instrumental in helping shape human rights and religious accommodation law in Canada.
Justice Shergill was born in Punjab, India, and immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of four. She grew up in Williams Lake, BC, and received her law degree from the University of Saskatchewan. Called to the British Columbia Bar in 1991, she has held leadership positions both within and outside the legal community. She has been involved with the Cabinet of Canadians, the Trial Lawyers Association of BC, and the Canadian Bar Association. From 2002 to 2008, Justice Shergill served on the Board of Directors of the Fraser Health Authority, the largest health region in the province. In 2017, Justice Shergill became the first turbaned judge in Canada.
Justice Shergill is a mother of three. She enjoys playing classical Indian musical instruments, learning languages, and training for martial arts
Join us as we celebrate Justice Shergill and the accomplishments of our community.
