Journal

About

The Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (British Columbia) Society (“FACL BC”) is excited to publish the inaugural issue of its journal.

The purpose of the FACL BC Journal (“Journal”) is to provide a space for contributors and readers to engage with and share content about the legal issues and topics relevant to the pan-Asian Canadian community in British Columbia. The Journal aims to publish content that includes but is not limited to:

  • local news in British Columbia that aligns with FACL BC’s mandate to promote equity, justice, and opportunity for the pan-Asian Canadian legal community;
  • case comments;
  • op-eds;
  • legal updates;
  • interviews with legal professionals;
  • statements published by the FACL BC Advocacy Committee; and
  • other FACL BC content at the discretion of the FACL BC Board.

This Journal is made possible through the work of FACL BC volunteers and a generous grant from the Law Foundation of BC.

We were honoured to launch the first edition of the Journal at the Shangri-La Hotel on April 25, 2025 (event details here).

A huge thank you to Jenny Huang (President 2024-2025) and Sebastian Chern (VP External 2024-2025) for their leadership, Serena Cheong (Editor-in-Chief and Co-Advocacy Chair 2024-2025) for spearheading the Journal with vision and passion, and David How (Marketing Subcommittee Chair 2024-2025 and moderator) for helping share this moment with the broader community. Thank you to our incredible volunteers, whose dedication turned this vision into reality.

A special thank you to our inspiring panelists and contributors to the Journal: Dr. Carol Liao (author of "Reflections on Equity and Asian Canadians in the Legal Profession"), Simirin Lally (co-author with Anita Bal, Harveer Garcha, and Neelam Jassal of "Gatekeepers to Diversity in the Legal Profession"), and Victor Tai (author of "From Hate to Crime: When Anti-Chinese Insults Cross the Line").

We were incredibly honoured to welcome Chief Justice Marchand, Chief Justice Skolrood, Associate Chief Justice Holmes, Justice Morishita, Judge Hoy, and Judge Chen, along with many distinguished leaders from across the legal community. With over 100 registrants, the strong interest helped make it a truly memorable and inspiring evening.

If you would like to obtain a copy of the Journal for yourself or your firm's library, please email us at info@faclbc.ca.
