Join us for FACL BC’s 11th annual gala. Building off of the success of our virtual conference last year, we will be offering a free virtual conference from 12:00 - 2:15 PM on November 18th. The virtual conference format will comprise multiple breakout sessions on advocacy, mentorship, and professional development.  We hope the experience and insights shared by the speakers and panelists will equip attendees with “tools” that will inspire and empower them to bring about positive change in their workplaces, communities, and beyond.

This year, our conference theme is “Belonging”.  Our theme encapsulates our excitement for finally being back together in person, as well as recognizes the growing inclusion of Asian Canadians in the legal profession.  We want to provide attendees with "tools" to empower and inspire them to bring about positive change in their workplaces, communities, and beyond.

FACL BC is grateful for the generous sponsorship of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) for our afternoon conference as well as TD Bank Group for being the title sponsor of our gala.

  • Kim Nguyen (President, FACL Quebec)

It has been a challenging past two years for the Asian community with the rise of anti-Asian hate and the scapegoating of the Asian community as a cause for the pandemic.  We are hopeful that as we emerge into this post-pandemic era, we are coming out stronger and more united than ever.  The goal of this conference is to reunite the Asian Canadian legal community across British Columbia and Canada

The Fireside Chat session will discuss the theme of belonging, but also the importance of the Asian-Canadian community in the face of anti-Asian hate across the country.

For the first time, we will be uniting the respective presidents of the FACL chapters across Canada. This diverse panel will serve as a reminder that the Asian Canadian legal community is there and hoping to inspire the next generation of lawyers and future leaders of the legal community.

Note: This event is eligible for 1 hour of CPD credit with the Law Society of British Columbia.

From the recruitment process to summering, articling, and subsequent years of practice, a sense of belonging is important for individual and communal well-being and flourishing in the legal profession. Our panel of experienced recruiters and mentors from the public and private sector will share their insights on how lawyers, especially of diverse backgrounds, have found this sense of belonging and provide advice that will be applicable to individuals at various stages of their legal career.

There will be opportunities for our attendees to engage, so bring your questions and we look forward to all the wisdom that will be shared!

Recognizing that as Asian-Canadian lawyers, translation permeates our jobs and personhood.

From literal translation between languages to translating legalese to layperson language to translating anger and frustration into justice. Asian-Canadian lawyers constantly traverse the lines of translation to establish not only our own belonging in the community, but the belonging of our clients as well.

Note: This event is eligible for 1 hour of CPD credit with the Law Society of British Columbia.
