How did you first get involved with FACL BC?

There is a small but apparently growing CPA-JD community in Vancouver, and a group of us occasionally gets together for dinner. Daniel Szeto, FACL BC’s previous Treasurer, and Kayla Siu, who served as Treasurer before him, are both part of that group. Seeing and hearing about the time and energy they each put into FACL BC was a big part of what inspired me to get more involved myself, eventually joining the Board as Treasurer in 2025. Before that, I enjoyed attending events as a member while I was a law student at UBC.

What has been your favourite FACL event or initiative so far?

The launch of the FACL BC Journal was a highlight, and I'm excited to see how it grows in the future. It's a meaningful and unique platform for Asian Canadian lawyers to share their stories and perspectives and to dive into the issues that matter to our community.

What advice would you give yourself if you were to go back in time?

Spend less time comparing yourself to other people and more time learning who you are. I remember feeling behind in undergrad, often comparing myself to classmates who seemed to be achieving things I wasn’t. I often say now that I felt like an “NPC" in my own story. While comparison can motivate you to push yourself, someone else’s achievements don't define your path and how you should see yourself. It’s more productive to spend time figuring out what matters to you and pursuing that.

What is something that not many people know about you?

Like many others, I enjoy travelling... but I also really enjoy writing about my experiences afterwards! I maintain a small travel blog, "Colin's Compass", where I write about some of the highlights, memories, and reflections from my travels.
