One of the ways FACL BC wants to be of service to our members is by providing a monthly forum to those in our community to speak on a variety of topics relevant to this period of COVID-19. We’ll do this through a monthly 45 min. session hosted by a member from our membership committee.

We know that you are inundated with information and events at this time so we plan to keep this crisp and focused. Each month will cover a different topic and feature a special guest related to the topic.

You can choose to register and attend one or more sessions. All sessions run from 12:00 - 12:45pm (30 min. interview; 15 min. Q&A).

Session 1: Friday, March 5 – Job Hunting for Legal Professionals with Dave Namkung

Dave Namkung is a long-time FACL BC member (and former FACL BC President from 2016-2017) with extensive recruitment experience. Although many legal professionals mainly think of career options, networking and such when actively searching for work, this session will touch on the importance of career building between job hunts. We will also touch on advice regarding career planning, career building, and job hunting more generally.

Session 2: Friday, April 9 – Real Estate & Strata Considerations with Alex Chang

Alex Chang is an associate at Lesperance Mendes Lawyers. He maintains a litigation and administrative law practice focusing on strata governance, residential and commercial tenancies, air space parcels and construction deficiency litigation. In this Friday's with FACL session, our discussion with Alex will surround the topic of strata governance and real estate in times of COVID. We will also discuss advice and tips for navigating work from home.

Session 3: Friday, May 7 – Setting Up Your Own Practice with Sara Forte and Jim Wu

Sara Forte, the founder of Forte Law, and Jim Wu, a lawyer also at Forte Law, will talk about their experiences running their own employment law practices – what motivated them, what inspired Jim to wind up his practice (and join Sara’s) and what are the challenges and rewards of having ran and continuing to run a law practice.

Session 4: Friday, June 4 Financial Planning for Lawyers

Join us on March 11, 2021 from 5:00-7:30pm for the Supportive Relationships Dialogue Series: Current Strategies for Fostering Reconciliation & Dismantling Colonial Approaches. Presented by the CBABC in partnership with the University of British Columbia Peter A. Allard School of Law - Indigenous Legal Studies, and Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (British Columbia) Society.

We are proud to present the next installment of the Supportive Relationships dialogue series. This dialogue series is focused on supportive relationships between BC's Indigenous and Pan-Asian communities, working together in the past, present, and future.

Change-makers, Kevin Huang, Founder of the Hua Foundation; Aaron Samuel, Pivot Legal Society; and, Corporal Chris Gosselin, Head of the RCMP's first all-Indigenous policing unit, address questions, such as:

    • What does truth and reconciliation look like to you and/or your communities?

    • What are some ways to build cross cultural solidarity?

    • What are some ways to decolonize public spaces and structures in BC?

Attendees of the session will be asked to watch the pre-recorded interviews provided by these change-makers in preparation to engage in a round-table discussion which will be moderated by Professor Hoi Kong, UBC Peter A. Allard School of Law.

    Registration is free. Registration link:

Why is saying “no” just as important as saying “yes”? FACL BC understands that systemic issues and power imbalances make it challenging to set boundaries and say “no” during your legal career. Learn to be your own advocate from our panel speakers, who will share how they have developed effective strategies to advocate for themselves at every stage of their legal journey. Our panelists range from young associates to senior lawyers in equity seeking groups who will share their experiences balancing their legal career with their life outside of work, and their tips and tricks to create healthy and sustainable boundaries in their work life.
