The Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (British Columbia) Society (FACL BC) expresses its warmest congratulations to Justices Nitya Iyer, K.C. and Edlyn Laurie on their appointments to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of British Columbia, respectively.

Justice Iyer replaces Justice L. Marchand on the Court of Appeal, who had been appointed Chief Justice of British Columbia in December of 2023, and will be the keynote speaker of our Membership Retreat next month. Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 2017, Justice Iyer was a law professor at the University of Toronto and the University of British Columbia, a member of the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, and a practicing lawyer. She was also appointed King’s Counsel in 2016.

Justice Laurie was born to Chinese-Filipino parents in Manila, Philippines, making her the first Justice of Filipino-Chinese descent and one of the first Filipino-Canadians appointed to British Columbia’s Supreme Court. Justice Laurie was a prosecutor with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, practicing criminal and constitutional law. Outside of her busy litigation practice, Justice Laurie served on several committees within the Public Prosecution Service and was involved with the School for Prosecutors as a vice principal and faculty member. She also serves as a council member for Health Quality B.C.

FACL BC is heartened to see Justices Iyer and Laurie appointed to their respective positions on the bench. After FACL BC has advocated for greater representation in our judiciary, we are glad to see the Honourable Arif Virani appoint a slate of judges who are as diverse as they are capable. A judiciary that reflects our province’s diversity and promotes access to justice is well-positioned to meet the needs of our community. We look forward to the Justices’ continued contribution to the legal profession and British Columbia.

May is Asian Heritage Month, a time for all Canadians to delve into the history of Asian Canadians and recognize their significant contributions to our society.

Since the 1990s, Asian Heritage Month has been nationally observed, gaining official recognition by the Federal Government in May 2002. Despite enduring discriminatory immigration policies like the “Chinese Exclusion Act” and the “continuous journey regulation,” Asian populations have persevered in Canada, leaving an indelible mark across various sectors including arts, science, sports, business, and government. Today, the multifaceted tapestry of Asian cultures and the enduring legacy of Asian Canadians profoundly shape Canada’s history, communities, and future.

The theme for this year’s Asian Heritage Month, “Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future: Amplifying Asian Canadian Legacy,” celebrates the diverse heritage and enduring contributions of people of Asian origin in Canada. On this special occasion, FACL BC encourages our members to explore and celebrate the vibrant cultures and histories of Asian Canadian communities.

In recognition of Asian Heritage Month, FACL BC invites you to our upcoming documentary screening with the Law Society of British Columbia. But I Look Like a Lawyer is FACL BC’s documentary that highlights the discrimination and bias faced by the Asian Canadian legal community in BC. The screening will take place on May 22, 2024 from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. The documentary is inspired by But I Was Wearing a Suit, which highlights the perspectives of the Indigenous legal community. Register here - limited spots remaining.

      Dear FACL BC Members,

Effective April 1, 2024, there will be an increase in Full Membership and Supporting Membership pricing from $50 to $80 per year. This adjustment is necessary to support the continued growth and sustainability of FACL BC, a non-profit society dedicated to serving the Asian Canadian legal community.

In addition, our memberships are currently valid for one year from the date of activation or renewal. Starting January 1, 2025, we will also be transitioning all memberships to a calendar year membership term (January-December) to facilitate a streamlined renewal process for all members. More details to follow in late 2024.

In an effort to mitigate the impact on our members, we are pleased to announce the following transitional measures:

      • Active Full Members and Supporting Members with renewal dates between April 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024 will have their membership term automatically extended to January 1, 2025 at no extra cost.

The prorated rebate discount code will only be available upon request from January 1, 2025 to January 31, 2025.
      • Articling students, NCA candidates, and judicial clerks to the BC Supreme Court, BC Court of Appeal, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Canada, Tax Court of Canada, and Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada are considered Full Members. However, if you fall under any of these categories, you can select the prorated discount membership option at checkout, which reduces the Full Member pricing from $80 to $50.  If you have any questions or issues regarding the prorated membership option, please contact info@faclbc.ca.

Student Membership pricing will remain complimentary and unchanged. Full Membership and Student Membership will continue to be the only classes of members with voting rights and eligibility to run for the FACL BC Board of Directors. The Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (British Columbia) Society (“FACL BC”) expresses its warmest congratulations to Judge Karen Leung on her appointment to the Provincial Court in the Vancouver Region. Judge Leung will be sworn in on March 4, 2024.

For the past decade, Judge Leung has significantly advanced access to justice as legal counsel at the BC Provincial Court. Her membership in committees liaising with counsel, the executive branch, and the Superior Courts strengthened relationships behind the scenes of the courtroom while streamlining the public’s access to the courts. In particular, she assisted with drafting Court Practice Directives and Notices to the Public that were vital in providing access to justice during the COVID-19 pandemic. From organizing the very first BC Provincial Court Twitter Town Hall to the creation of the Virtual Courts Toolkit, Judge Leung’s work has set the stage for how our legal system can pivot in response to unprecedented times.

A judiciary that reflects our province’s diversity and promotes access to justice is well-positioned to meet the needs of our community and aligns with FACL BC’s mandate of promoting equity, justice and opportunity for Asian Canadian legal professionals and the wider community. We look forward to Judge Leung’s continued contribution to the legal profession.
